PLM vs. TEM Testing Methods

Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) magnifies objects up to 100-400x their original size. PLM is the most common and economical technique used for analyzing bulk building materials. PLM can differentiate asbestos from non-asbestos fibers and further classify the mineral family (species) so long as there are no limitations present within the building materials. The limitations of PLM are interferences present in the building material matrix (tar and petroleum binding components, sub-micron particulate adhering to the surface of the asbestos material etc.) that make it difficult to distinguish asbestos fibers.

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) magnifies objects up to 20,000x or greater it's original size. TEM represents the most sophisticated technology available for characterizing asbestos minerals. This technique is now the standard for most airborne investigations including post abatement clearance testing as well as diagnostic and environmental monitoring activities. TEM is always recommended if a non-friable organically bound (NOB) building material (ex. floor tiles, roofing material etc.) results in a negative PLM analysis. The advanced magnification along side the gravimetric reduction process allows for much more accurate results and can truly confirm a negative PLM analysis.
